Ready to do the work to reconnect?
I’m here to help! My name is Sharon Shaver and I’m an Independently Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Ohio. I’ve come to enjoy working with couples over the last couple of years and found that a combination of therapeutic approaches works best.
Through working with me you will learn about your how your past relationships may be affecting how you show up in your current relationship, how to recognize and challenge unhealthy thinking patterns, how to choose valued action in difficult times, and how to reconnect through emotionally safe communication with your partner.
If it’s time for change, if you’re ready to do the work, if you want to be closer than ever to your partner, I can help.
My Approach to Therapy
My goal from day one of therapy is to teach you the skills and help you gain the insight needed to work through issues in your relationship on your own. To do this I start with a few sessions of teaching skills to help you recognize how your past may be affecting you, how your thinking patterns may be affecting the way you react to your partner, and how to use your personal values to help you choose valued action in times of stress.
After you begin to feel comfortable with these skills I will guide you and your partner through learning how to communicate differently. It’s hard to not get our guards up, feel like we need to defend ourselves, or feel that we’ve failed our partners somehow when they bring up issues or concerns. I will help you to be able to pause, attune to what you’re partner is saying and feeling, and speak to their needs rather than immediately getting caught up in your own. This helps our partners to feel seen and heard and deepens our emotional connection.
After all the skills have been taught we’ll begin to work through processing any past ruptures in your relationship (cheating, lying, broken promises). This work is necessary to ensure that the pains of the past do not continue to show up in your relationship. This piece can be difficult, but with the skills that you’ve learned you and your partner will be better able to navigate this painful conversation in a much safer way.
From here, we’ll fine tune the skills you’ve learned. Explore moments where you’ve failed in communication and how we can adjust in the future and really work towards you and your partner being able to utilize these skills, in the real world, without me to guide you.
How is therapy with me different?
If sitting on a couch, being psychoanalyzed, and asked repeatedly “how does that make you feel” doesn’t sound like something you’d enjoy then you’re in the right place. I’ve learned from day one of my therapeutic training that therapy doesn’t need to be nor should it be a stuffy/uncomfortable process.
I will always encourage you to be your full and authentic self and will not judge you for being human, and if the day should come where you decide your time in therapy with me is done I will celebrate with you. I don’t believe that therapy needs to be forever, and will work from day one to get you to a place where you feel confident in taking on lifes challenges by yourself and with your partner.
